As part of the Global Engagement Series organized by the American Society of International Law (ASIL), a joint panel, co-sponsored by ESIL, took place on Monday, 13 March 2023 (12:00-13:00 EDT / 17:00-18:00 CET) on “A Peace Pact with Nature”: CBD COP15 and the future of biodiversity conservation.

In December 2022, the State Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity concluded a historic agreement to protect nature and reverse biodiversity loss around the world. COP15 has been hailed as a significant breakthrough in setting conservation priorities for the next decade and is expected to provide a global roadmap for an equitable biodiversity governance framework. It has also provoked renewed debate on the social justice and human rights dimensions of international conservation measures, including on who pays for and benefits from the global biodiversity framework and what impact it will have on the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities in protected areas. This panel addressed how best the goals of the new global biodiversity framework may be realized and the challenges that will arise in their implementation.
