It is with deep sadness that the faculty, students, and staff of Georg-August-Universität Göttingen have learned of the passing of Prof. Dr. Dres. h.c. Thomas Buergenthal, the former president of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and former judge of the International Court of Justice.

Thomas Buergenthal survived the concentration camps Auschwitz and Sachsenhausen as a child, yet he remained loyal to Göttingen, the city where he subsequently reunited with his mother, attended school, and later accepted an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Law and honorary citizenship.

To remember Thomas Buergenthal, a memorial event will take place on Friday 13 October 2023 at 2 p.m CEST at Alfred-Hesse-Saal, Paulinerkirche (Papendiek 14, 37073 Göttingen)

For attending via Zoom and all other inquiries please contact intlaw@gwdg.de.
