The Interest Group on Human Rights of the European Society of International Law and the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) are organising a panel discussion on Hannah Arendt’s essay “We Refugees”. The event will be held online on 25 February 2021 at 16:00 CET.

Despite other topics’ currently dominating the news, forced migration continues to be one of the greatest challenges for human rights and the international community. In her essay “We Refugees”, first published in the Menorah Journal in 1943, Hannah Arendt gives her account of what it meant to be a Jewish immigrant in the 1940s. She describes an experience of exclusionary violence that comes with the feeling of not belonging anywhere and the impossibility of finding one’s place in a society which does not show interest in one’s real story.
