On occasion of the 2020 ESIL Research Forum on “Solidarity: The Quest for Founding Utopias of International Law”, to be held in Catania on 23 – 24 April 2020, the ESIL International Economic Law Interest Group will convene a workshop on “The Value of Solidarity in International Economic Law”, which will take place on Thursday, 23 April 2020.
We invite papers from early-career scholars (especially advanced PhD students and post-doctoral researchers) addressing the above indicated topic, developing, in particular, the following themes:
1) Solidarity and International Trade Law. Within this theme, topics to be developed include the relation between non-trade values and free trade, special and differential treatment for developing and least-developed countries, also considering the currently undergoing debate within the WTO on the concept of developing country, and the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda within the WTO legal framework;
2) Solidarity and International Investment Law. Within this theme, the suggested research approach is that of including solidarity as a tool for interpreting International Investment Law, as, for instance, including the obligation to “contribute to the host State development” within the definition of investment, and, more generally, of consequently shaping the right to regulate of the Host Country, thus promoting a consideration of International Investment Law where the protection of foreign investments and investors meaningfully converges with the sustainable development of the Host State;
3) Solidarity and International Financial Law. Within this theme, the suggested research approach is that of promoting a socially and environmentally sustainable financial system, thus including non-trade values in the shaping and for the assessment of international financial regulatory standards.
