During the 18th ESIL Annual Conference in Aix-en-Provence, the ESIL President awarded the 2023 ESIL Prizes to the winners.

ESIL Monograph Prize

The 2023 European Society of International Law Monograph Prize jury has unanimously decided to award this year’s prize to Frederick Cowell for his book Defensive Relativism, the Use of Cultural Relativism in International Legal Practice, published by University of Pennsylvania Press. ESIL Collaborative Prize

The 2023 European Society of International Law Collaborative Book Prize jury has unanimously decided to award this year’s prize to Anne Peters, Jérôme de Hemptinne, and Robert Kolb for their book Animals in the International Law of Armed Conflict, published by Cambridge University Press. ESIL Young Scholar Prize

The 2023 European Society of International Law Young Scholar Prize jury has unanimously decided to award this year’s prize to  Runar Lie for his paper “Ghosts of the Past: The Dominance of Older Treaty Language in International Investment Arbitration”, delivered on Wednesday 30 August 2023 at the pre-conference workshop “Pursuing Fairness in Times of Crisis: Reflections on the Future of International Economic Law”, organised by the ESIL Interest Group on International Economic Law.

The jury also awarded an honourable mention to Sek Lun Cheong, PhD candidate at Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne, for his paper “Investor Misconduct, Impacted Communities, and the Fair and Equitable Treatment Standard in International Investment Law: Whose Equity?”, delivered on Friday 1 September during Agora 9 on “The Law of Investments: Is this still Fairness?”.
