The Right to a Healthy Environment: Old hat or new hope?
In a world threatened by the ever-worsening peril of climate change, the recognition of a human right to a healthy environment has been a last hope to many fighting for climate protection. On 28 July 2022, the UN General Assembly recognized the human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment in what has been described as a historic or landmark resolution. What – if any – is the political and legal significance of this resolution, and how new is the right to a healthy environment really?
The ESIL Interest Group on International Human Rights Law in partnership with the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) is delighted to discuss these and other questions with our distinguished speakers David Boyd (UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment, University of British Columbia), Marie Petersmann (University of Tilburg), Otto Spijkers (Wuhan University) and Arphita Kodiveri (NYU), with an introduction and moderation by Pierre Thielbörger (Ruhr University Bochum).
