The Diversity Advisory Body

At the 2021 ESIL Conference held in Stockholm, the ESIL Board adopted and has now published the ESIL Statement on Diversity, Equality and Inclusion. In conjunction with this statement, the Board announced to the General Assembly its proposal to create an ‘Advisory Body on Diversity, Equality and Inclusion’, to provide the ESIL Board with guidance on best practices within the Society.
The Diversity Advisory Body (DAB) supports the ESIL  Board with independent advice on matters relating to diversity, equality, and inclusion within the Society.
The ESIL Board takes the view that the establishment of an independent body to advise it reinforces the commitment of ESIL to diversity, equality and inclusion. Members of the DAB cannot include existing members of the ESIL Board to preclude any concerns about a perceived conflict of interest. The first DAB, comprised of five members, started its three-year mandate in May 2022.

The DAB Role

  • The DAB is briefed about ESIL activities and is invited to comment upon and make recommendations to the ESIL  Board as to how to improve ESIL’s practices in respect of diversity, equality, and inclusion. These recommendations are not binding.
  • The DAB receives regular updates as to the ESIL Board’s activities in respect of diversity, equality, and inclusion, and is invited to provide guidance thereupon.
  • The DAB may present its views at the General Assembly’s annual meeting and take questions from members of ESIL.

As a member of the ESIL Early-Career Network Coordinating Committee you will take part in deciding the direction for the ESIL and you will interact directly with the ESIL Board.

Travel grants to each ESIL Research Forum and Annual Conference are provided for up to two DAB members who do not have any other institutional support. This is done with the expectation that DAB members will actively participate in and organise in-person activities at these events.

Number of available seats and how to apply

The ESIL Board is currently looking to fill three (3) empty seats in the DAB for a mandate of of two (2) years with the possibility of a one (1) year extension.

The ESIL Board welcomes expressions of interest (self-nominations) or nominations of potential persons, from across ESIL, to become members of the DAB.

Nominations should be sent by 5 July 2025 by 23:59 CEST Time Zone to the ESIL Secretariat via esil.secretariat@eui.eu with the subject ‘DAB Nomination‘.

We ask for an updated curriculum vitae of the candidate and a short motivational letter explaining why you believe you, or the person that you are nominating, is well-positioned to contribute to this specific aspect of ESIL’s mission.

Ideally, members of the DAB would be persons of recognised integrity and experience with diversity issues, as well as international professional or scholarly societies. In principle, the composition of the DAB should also reflect the diverse membership of ESIL as a whole, including candidates who identify with groups that are under-represented within ESIL.

Candidates are expected to be current ESIL members.
