“International Energy Law Dialogues: The End of Fossil Fuels? International Law Perspective”

26 February 2026, 12:30-13:30 (CET), online

ABOUT THE EVENT

Recent climate COP decisions have reaffirmed States’ commitment to transitioning their energy systems away from fossil fuels, with the gradual elimination of fossil fuel subsidies being a crucial component of this process. For many years, the IPCC has underscored the scientific evidence demonstrating the urgent need to phase out fossil fuels. Yet, despite this clear scientific consensus, fossil fuels remain heavily subsidised worldwide.

Recent developments in international law place the issue of fossil fuels subsidies at the centre of both judicial decisions and treaty negotiations. This Webinar will examine these developments, with a particular focus on the recent ICJ Advisory Opinion on Climate Change and on the ongoing UN negotiations of a treaty to combat plastic pollution, exploring how international law is increasingly shaping the global transition away from fossil fuels and featuring a conversation between Dominic Coppens (Maastricht University) and Helionor de Anzizu (CIEL), moderated by Elena Cima (University of Geneva).
