On 25 March 2024, the ESIL Interest Group on International Criminal Justice is holding an online roundtable discussion on “The Interplay between International Criminal Tribunals and Courts and Domestic Accountability“.

In this roundtable discussion, the role of hybrid tribunals, the principle of complementarity, and the balance between prosecuting high-level and low-ranking perpetrators will be scrutinized. The roundtable aims to facilitate a comprehensive dialogue on whether states have become more capable or willing to investigate international crimes and the evolving role of international criminal tribunals in supporting and complementing domestic legal processes, reflecting on the developments of the past three decades.

The roundtable discussion will feature:

  • Patryk I. Labuda (Free University of Berlin; Polish Academy of Sciences)
  • Geoffrey Lugano (Kenyatta University)
  • Sarah Nouwen (European University Institute; Cambridge University)
  • Elies van Sliedregt (Tilburg University)

Moderator: Alexandre Skander Galand (Maastricht University)

The event will take place on 25 March 2024 from 14:00-16:00 CET via Zoom. A Q&A will follow the roundtable discussion.
