Prior to the publication of the comprehensive legal commentary on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by Winfried Huck, a reading sample comprising the analysis of SDG 14, which addresses the sustainable development and use of oceans, seas and marine resources is now available.

Marine and coastal ecosystems absorb a large part of the heat generated by greenhouse gas emissions and are key to a solution in the fight against climate change. Yet, the conservation of marine biodiversity and resources is not only widely discussed in global climate policies and law. For a growing world population, oceans, seas and marine resources are an important source of food and income and could contribute to achieving a sustainable energy transition.

An insight into the legal translation of SDG 14 and the sustainable development of marine and coastal ecosystems in different jurisdictions around the world can be found via SSRN.

The SDG Commentary exposes foundations, contexts and definitions of all SDGs and places their targets and indicators in a legal context that is reflected in the light of the jurisprudence of various jurisdictions and the Global Agenda 2030.
