Race-ing Global Inequality is the second seminar of International Law Outside the Box, the 2020/2021 CELI Peace Talks, Annual Series of Leicester Law School’s Centre for European Law and Internationalisation. The seminar will be held on 9 December 2020 from 19:00 – 20:30 CET.
Two distinguished scholars, Prof. E. Tendayi Achiume, Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law and UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance; and Dr. Robert Knox, Senior Lecturer in Law at Liverpool Law School will discuss the forms of racial inequality in the global international order, including in foundations and operations of contemporary international law.
Professor Achiume’s will discuss inter alia, her recent report on racial and xenophobic discrimination, emerging digital technologies, and immigration enforcement – mapping the relationship between racism, AI and international law.
Dr Knox will examine the image of international law in relation to anti-racism, and will discuss how international law produces race and racialisation in ways which perpetuate global racial inequality.
The panel will also discuss the inherent whiteness of international law, and discuss helpful and unhelpful critiques of decolonisation initiatives in institutions and the difficulties involved in addressing white supremacy in the international legal academy.
