ABOUT THE EVENT
This event marks the launch of the ESIL Interest Group on Reparations in International Law and is hosted by the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies at Leiden University in The Hague. It will examine the International Law Commission’s work on Compensation for the Damage Caused by Internationally Wrongful Acts – recently included in its long-term programme of work – and reflect on how it might foster greater coherence across the law of reparations. Professor Mārtiņš Paparinskis, the ILC’s Special Rapporteur on the topic, will deliver the keynote address, followed by a panel discussion with Eric de Brabandere, Lucy Reed and Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh. Drawing on developments in the practice of courts and tribunals, investor-State dispute settlement, international claims commissions and climate litigation, the speakers will explore how compensation is conceptualised and awarded, as well as the challenges of identifying, assessing and valuing damage.
