Pierre d’Argent (b. 1967) is full Professor of Public International Law at the Law Faculty of the University of Louvain (Belgium). He is also a guest professor at the University of Leiden (The Netherlands) and Member of the Brussels Bar (special counsel to Foley Hoag LLP). He served as First Secretary of the International Court of Justice (2009-2011).

Associate Member of the Institute of International Law (2015).

He holds a Master of law and a Master of philosophy from the University of Louvain (UCL), a LL.M. degree from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. in law from the University of Louvain.

Awarded the Suzanne Bastid Prize 2002 of the French Society for International Law for his doctoral dissertation on war reparations (Les réparations de guerre en droit international public. La responsabilité internationale des États à l’épreuve de la guerre, Bruylant – LGDJ, 2002).

Postdoctoral fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung at the Max-Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Heidelberg (2002).

Member of the Brussels Bar (1991-1995), research assistant at the University of Louvain (1991-2001) and professor at the same university since 2002.

Counsel and advocate of the DRC before the International Court of Justice in the Arrest Warrant case (2002); counsel and advocate of Belgium in Ping An v. Belgium (ICSID Case No. ARB/12/29) (2015); has argued international law cases before domestic courts in Belgium, France and Luxembourg.
