The ESIL Interest Group on the EU as a Global Actor, the Centre for the Law of EU External Relations (CLEER) and the T.M.C. Asser Institute are jointly organising a one-day conference on 11 December 2019 on the ‘EU Trade Agreements and the Duty to Respect Human Rights Abroad’, will be hosted at the TMC Asser Institute in The Hague.
The conference, which aims at exploring whether the EU is bound by human rights obligations towards individuals outside the territory of its Member States when it concludes trade agreements with third countries,  is organised around four broad themes:

  • The EU’s Trade Agreements and the Duty to Protect Human Rights Abroad:  Theoretical Underpinnings
  • The EU’s Trade Agreements and the Duty to Protect Human Rights Abroad: An International Law perspective
  • The Western Sahara litigation and its Impact on establishing the EU’s Duty to Protect Human Rights abroad
  • Case-Studies regarding the EU’s Duty to Protect Human Rights abroad
