Law of the Sea on the edge of Bosphorus Summer School is dedicated to the law of the sea which regulates the activities of States and their interactions regarding maritime matters.

Description

The summer school will start by giving a general overview on the historical development and introductory remarks regarding to the notions of Law of the Sea and then will focus on 1982 United Nations Law of Sea Convention. Furthermore, maritime boundary delimitation and different types of jurisdictional zones in the ocean are among the subjects that will be examined during this summer school.

The summer school will cover several uses of the seas such as fishing, shipping, navigation and deep seabed mining. Additionally, protection of sea environment as a subject which is studied more and more in recent years, will be analyzed.

The summer school will have enough time for discussing dispute settlement mechanisms, recent and ongoing disputes concerning law of the seasuch as Project of Canal Istanbul, Aegean Sea Conflict between Turkey and Greece, Delimitation of Maritime Zones in East Mediterranean Sea and South China Sea Arbitration case. Moreover criminal activities such as human trafficking and piracy with Somalia example will be examined.

Target Audience

The Course is dedicated to under-graduate, graduate and doctoral students, lawyers, researchers from all over the world. A law degree is not required, however all candidates must prove deep interest in international law and qualified academic background.  Besides, in order to be able to follow the course, all candidates must be well qualified in English.

Scholarship

We are happy to announce that Istanbul Center of International Law received a number of scholarships and  we are able to offer a partial scholarship to some of our Bachelor Level participants. In this respect, ESIL members will be prioritarily evaluated

All who are interested in receiving partial scholarship need to indicate their reasons in the motivation letter. And please specify in your motivation letter that you will or will not attend the program if you could not receive a scholarship.
